I realize it has been some time since I have written in this space. The past few months have been full of changes, most notable among them being the passing of my mother in February and one of my daughters leaving earlier this month for a year in Sweden. In the midst of everything, I have prioritized working hard to bring you a book on responding to deconstruction called, Awakening Faith: A Guide for Loving Those Who Leave the Church.
If you have been plugged into the church world at all over the past couple of years, you have likely been hearing about faith deconstruction and the growing number of people who are deconstructing their Christian faith. This naturally raises the question of how devoted Christians ought to respond to loved ones who are questioning or actively deconstructing their faith.
Too often, Christians respond to deconstruction from a place of panic and fear rather than love. They mean well, but their actions have the opposite effect than they intend—conveying judgment, causing relational damage, and creating unnecessary distance between them and their loved one. As a result, their loved one begins to think of them as an unsafe person and someone with whom they have no interest in discussing their spiritual journey.
In Awakening Faith, I aim to help Christians avoid these pitfalls and maintain a positive relationship with their loved one throughout their spiritual journey. In it, I explore what it means to relate to a deconstructing loved one from a place of faith, hope, and love. Offering twelve biblical affirmations, I show how you can maintain a supportive relationship while remaining true to your own faith.
This book has been a labor of love. Having been on both sides—the concerned loved one and the one experiencing deconstruction—I am passionate about both offering hope to concerned Christians and creating space for people to work out in their own minds and hearts what they truly believe. Through this book, I intend to convey love to all, wherever they are on their spiritual journey.
The Awakening Faith e-book is now available for pre-order on Apple Books, Barnes and Noble, Amazon, and other online retailers, and will be officially released on Tuesday, June 27. The paperback version will be making its way to all the major online retailers over the next few days.
